Dr. Elizabeth Lusczek Awarded Patent for Hemorrhage Detection Technology
Elizabeth Lusczek, PhD, Associate Professor in the Division of Computational Health Sciences, along with collaborators at the University of Minnesota System, has been awarded a U.S. patent for technology to help quickly assess and treat hemorrhage and other conditions.
The patent (US 12,453,480, issued October 28, 2025) describes a method that uses chemical sensors to analyze volatile organic compounds in the breath to determine the severity of a patient's condition when hemorrhagic shock is suspected. This approach could improve early diagnosis and support faster clinical decision-making in trauma and surgical care.
Congratulations to Dr. Lusczek and the team on this exciting achievement!
