Melissa Brunsvold, MD, FACS, FCCM, MAMSE

Dr. Brunsvold serves as the Vice Chair for Education and as the System Medical Director for Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) for respiratory failure. Nationally, Dr. Brunsvold participates in leadership and committee work in several organizations and contributes substantially to the Fundamental Critical Care Support curriculum through the Society of Critical Care Medicine. She has authored over 80 peer-reviewed journal articles, focusing primarily on education topics and ECMO. Dr. Brunsvold has been nationally recognized for her contributions in these areas. She received the 2024 Academy for Excellence in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Award (University of Minnesota), the 2024 Parker J. Palmer Courage to Teach Award (Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education), the 2023 Shubin-Weil Master Clinician/Teacher: Excellence in Bedside Teaching Award (Society of Critical Care Medicine), the 2017 ELSO Platinum Award for Excellence in Life Support (Extracorporeal Life Support Organization), and the 2014 Phillip J. Wolfson Outstanding Teaching Award (Association for Surgical Education).
