Intramural Pediatric Research Seminar Series (IMPRESS)
The Intramural Pediatric Research Seminar Series (IMPRESS) provides an opportunity to discover the wide variety of amazing cutting edge, interdisciplinary and collaborative work being done across the Department of Pediatrics. This event will occur on the last Tuesday of every month.
Trophoblast Development and Placental Susceptibility to Viral Infection
The placenta supports the metabolic needs of the developing offspring while acting as an immune barrier against the vertical transmission of bloodborne pathogens. While most maternal infections resolve harmlessly, some viruses can establish placental infections that have devastating effects on fetal development. Recent pandemics have demonstrated how our limited understanding of viral pathogenesis during pregnancy and in the placenta left us poorly able to assess which emerging pathogens present elevated risk during pregnancy. Research in the Bierle lab uses cutting-edge models of placental development, next-generation sequencing technologies, and in vivo experimentation to study infection at the maternal-fetal interface.
