Pediatric Research, Education & Scholarship Symposium (PRESS)

PRESS is an annual event through which the Department of Pediatrics celebrates and showcases the depth and breadth of research and scholarly activities performed by Department trainees and sponsored by faculty members. PRESS uses a combination of oral and poster presentations to showcase these activities.

  • 10:30am-12:30pm: Poster setup

Eligibility

Who can submit an abstract for presentation?

  • Learners who are:
    • Undergraduate Students
    • Medical Students
    • Graduate Students
    • Pediatric Residents
    • Pediatric Fellows
    • Postdoctoral Fellows
  • Are submitting scholarly work related to children's health
  • Have a UMN Department of Pediatrics faculty research mentor

*Trainees who have an accepted oral presentation at Pediatric Academic Societies (PAS) are strongly encouraged to submit their abstracts for oral presentations at PRESS and will be given priority. 

Submission Guidelines

  • Abstracts should be no more than 300 words.
  • You will also be asked to submit 2 keywords for your presentation.
  • You must select the presentation method you are applying: Poster only or consideration for Oral Presentation. If you are a Graduate Student, select the 3 Minute Thesis Presentation.

Important to note

  • Any abstract submitted for a Poster presentation and meets the eligibility requirements will be accepted to present at PRESS.
  • Graduate Students who meet the eligibility requirements will be accepted for the Three Minute Thesis Presentation
  • Abstracts submitted for Oral Presentation will be reviewed by the Pediatrics Research Council. Eight (8) abstracts will be selected to be presented at PRESS

Poster Printers

  • University Printing Services
    • Allow 2-3 day turnaround
    • Submit a PDF, PowerPoint or common image files to the printer (PDF Preferred).
    • You will need an EFS Chart String to pay for printing costs.
  • John & company at UMN Posters
    • Ask for costs to be tax exempt
    • Submit and observe notes on the submission form for policies

Paying for your Poster

  • Undergraduate Students
    • Ask your mentor to support the cost.
  • Medical Students
  • Graduate Students
    • Ask your mentor to support the cost.
  • Pediatric Residents
    • Pediatric Residents can pay for their poster and request reimbursement from the Pediatric Education Office.
  • Pediatric Fellows
    • Ask your scholarly mentor if they have funds to support the cost.  If they do not, your $300 Annual Education Allowance can be used.

Oral Presentation Guidelines

  • Each presenter has a total of 15 minutes to present and answer questions from the audience.
  • Final presentation as a Google Slides presentation (16:9 ratio) will be due on March 29th

3 Minute Thesis Presentation  Guidelines

  • 3MT develops academic, presentation, and research communication skills and supports the development of research students' capacity to quickly explain their research in a language appropriate to a non-specialist audience leaving them wanting to know more.
  • 3MT Competition Rules
    • Single static PowerPoint slide. No slide transitions, animations, or “movement” of any description are allowed. The slide is to be presented from beginning of oration.
    • No additional electronic media (e.g. sound and video files) are permitted.
    • No additional props (e.g. costumes, musical instruments, lab equipment) are permitted.
    • Presentations are limited to 3 minutes maximum, and participants exceeding 3 minutes are disqualified.
    • Presentations are to commence from the stage.
    • Presentations are to be spoken word (e.g. no poems, raps, or songs).
    • Presentations are considered to have commenced when a presenter starts their presentation through either movement or speech.

Research mentors for undergraduate students, medical students, graduate students and postdoctoral fellows are expected to support the costs of poster printing for presenters

Each judge is part of a scoring team. Each scoring team has been assigned to a specific category of learners for each session. Keep the category level in mind as you are scoring. The award categories are split as follows:

  • Undergraduate Students
  • Medical Students
  • Post-Doc Fellow/Graduate Student
  • Medical Residents
  • Medical Fellows

Posters will be scored in 4 categories.

  • Explanation of Research
  • Presentation
  • Q&A Section
  • Overall Research / Report Design
