Masonic Institute for the Developing Brain Opening November 1st at the U of M

The Masonic Institute for the Developing Brain (MIDB) will be opening November 1st as a collaborative center for expert researchers, community members, policy experts, and providers studying brain development. The goal of this institute is to study and advance brain health from early development onward to benefit the health of those in the community. Furthermore, MIDB aims to initiate new research opportunities surrounding a child’s rapidly developing brain, share this knowledge with other physicians to improve medical care, collaborate with other researchers and disciplines to tackle this project in a well-rounded approach, and to engage and apply this knowledge to the surrounding community. Physicians and Co-Directors for MIDB, Damien Fair, PhD, Professor in the Division of Clinical Behavioral Neuroscience, and Michael Georgieff, MD, Professor and Director for the Division of Neonatology, will both be leading the team as they strive to improve brain health for families throughout Minnesota. 

This research facility is unique in the sense that instead of looking at specific neurobehavioral disorders, their origins, and their treatments, MIDB focuses on researching the processes in which the brain develops as a whole. This approach can then be used to further relate these developmental processes to multiple neurobehavioral disorders, potentially resulting in more encompassing treatment and detection methods.
