With COVID-19 Cases in Minnesota Schools Slowly Declining, Many Experts Still Promote Caution

As COVID-19 cases are starting to slowly decline following the beginning of the school year surge, medical professionals are expressing caution and claiming time will tell as to whether the latest surge is wrapping up. Since the approval of the Pfizer vaccine for children 5-11 happened so recently, the vast majority of children have yet to be vaccinated and are still at risk of contracting COVID in schools. Many physicians, such as Beth Thielen, MD, PhD, Assistant Professor in the Division of Pediatric Infectious Diseases at the University of Minnesota, are hopeful that this decline will continue, but encourage continued precautions as we have not reached the lower infection numbers and community spread rates that were seen in early summer.
