Neonatology
The Division of Neonatology is dedicated to providing innovative care, conducting research, and teaching skills to recognize and treat medical problems of the neonate.
The Division of Neonatology participates fully in the mission of the Department of Pediatrics, focusing its attention through patient care, teaching and research on medical problems that arise during infancy and the sequelae of neonatal diseases that persist into later life.
Education & Training
The Division of Neonatology has a strong commitment to teaching with all members involved in medical education, focusing on normal neonatal physiology, as well as the pathophysiology and current advances in the care of sick infants. The division provides education to a variety of medical trainees involved in the care of newborn infants: medical students; pediatrics, medicine-pediatrics, family medicine and obstetric residents; neonatal fellows, other pediatric subspecialty fellows, and maternal fetal medicine fellows. The majority of learning takes place while providing care in the NICU setting, including didactics. We also have an advanced simulation program to aid in teaching technical, cognitive, and communication skills required to care for healthy and sick newborns.
Patient Care
For members of the division, a desire to provide the highest quality care for critically ill infants is the principal reason for a career in neonatal medicine. The privilege of serving our patients and their families on our NICUs and through our NICU Follow-up Program motivates and inspires all of us.
Research
Conducting basic and clinical research in the field of neonatal medicine is an important mission of this division. The division is committed to studying the underlying processes of the diseases that affect our patients and bringing those discoveries to the bedside in a timely way in order to improve important health outcomes such as neurodevelopment, nutrition, metabolic and cardiovascular health and immune health. Our research investments span from fundamental laboratory science to clinical trials and occur globally as well as locally.

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion
Division of Neonatology - Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Mission Statement
Our overarching goal is to be a pediatric division at the University of Minnesota that fosters inclusion, acceptance, and support for all persons, independent of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, or religion. To fulfill this goal, we will:
1) Identify instances of implicit and explicit bias in Neonatology that affect the care of our patients and families, and the careers and well-being of our faculty, healthcare partners, and trainees.
2) Implement changes to abolish biases and disparities by utilizing research, quality improvement, community and workplace collaborations, mentoring, recruitment, and education.
