Global Pediatrics Program
Mission
To improve the health and development of the world’s most vulnerable children in partnership with health professionals at home and abroad to ensure that every child reaches his or her full potential.
Background
The global pediatrics track was created in 2005 to provide focused curriculum in global child health to the residents in the pediatric and medicine-pediatric training programs. The track grew into a more comprehensive program crossing divisions with educational, research and advocacy initiatives. Today, the faculty collaborate with international colleagues in various sites including Bolivia, Cambodia, Laos, Nigeria, Uganda, Tanzania, and Vietnam. Domestically, faculty partnerships include colleagues in the Native American community of White Earth in Northern Minnesota.
Education & Training
Education is based on competency-based curriculum in global child health developed by University of Minnesota faculty working with Makerere University faculty based in Kampala, Uganda. Half of the curriculum is considered core information in pediatric medicine, which all residents and faculty must know. The remaining curriculum is focused on knowledge, skills, attitudes and experience needed by trainees, who plan to make global health a central part of their career.
Research
Global research is interdisciplinary across the department, at times across the academic health center and even the university. Faculty are primarily doing research in Nigeria, Uganda, Tanzania and Cambodia in the areas of neonatal health, nutrition and respiratory support in resource-limited areas.
Advocacy
Residents and faculty are encouraged to participate in advocacy activities locally, nationally and internationally. These activities include discussions with state legislatures, attendance at the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Legislative Conference, participating in the AAP Advocacy elective in Washington, D.C. and leadership on the Executive Committee of the AAP’s Section on Global Health.
