Dr. Mesfin's clinical expertise is in the diagnosis, work-up, and management of critically ill patients, ventilator management, hemodynamic support, and multidisciplinary care coordination within the ICU. Dr. Mesfin is a health services researcher with an interest in observational studies assessing outcomes of critical illness with a focus on end-of-life care, goals of care communication, and health disparities during critical illness.
He is particularly interested in identifying risk factors for low-value care near the end of life and optimizing goals of care communication to mitigate potentially unwanted intensive care near the end of life. His prior work focuses on understanding the role of recommendation during goals of care conversations.
