The collective mission of the Department of Medicine is to improve the health and well-being of individuals and their communities, both now and in the future, by integrating scientific discovery with exemplary medical care, ensuring equity and diversity, and training the next generation of physicians in the science and art of medicine.

Medical Education

The Department is an innovative leader in medical education and has developed new, exciting curricula for medical student and resident education. We provide developmental opportunities for students or residents interested in primary care, global health, hospital medicine, medical education, clinical research, or basic science. The Department is a national leader in training subspeciality physicians and has NIH-funded training grants in six divisions.

The Department of Medicine is one of the top research departments in the United States and represents the largest research faculty group at the University of Minnesota. Core areas of excellence in research include cardiovascular medicine, diabetes, infectious diseases, stem cell biology, vascular disease, hemostasis, autoimmunology, fibrotic lung disease, medical genetics, and cancer.
