Honoring Choices Across Cultures: End of Life and Advance Care Planning
This 3-4-hour, lecture-based course prepares individuals in many disciplines (physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, chaplains, social workers, or others) who provide clinical care or support for patients and their families and will provide practical advice and a useful toolkit to direct discussions about advance care planning and to provide end-of-life care using core values of compassion and cultural humility. It is offered free of charge.
Objectives
This course enables you to:
- Recognize the difference between advance care planning and advance directives.
- Discuss how to apply the LEARN model of patient-centered communication*
- Interpret the Healing by Heart cross-cultural framework to assess and compare ethical conflicts between patients, families, and clinicians.
- Recognize the difference between cultural competence and cultural humility, and the importance of cultural humility when caring for patients and their families.
*The LEARN model was developed at Stanford University and is an effective model of cross-cultural communication based on the following core behaviors: Listen, Explain, Acknowledge, Recommend and Negotiate.
