Dr. Fredrick is a gastroenterologist in the luminal division at the University of Minnesota. He completed medical school at Georgetown University where he graduated as a Population Health Scholar with an interest in health systems and quality management. He traveled to Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota where he completed his Internal Medicine Residency and Gastroenterology Fellowship. After fellowship training he joined the University of Minnesota as a gastroenterologist in the luminal division. Clinically his interests have grown over his training.
His primary interest is in obesity management, with a focus on the application of precision medicine to provide the best personalized care for each patient. He seeks to explore the impact of dietary modification and nutrition both on obesity and on gastrointestinal diseases at large. In fellowship he customized his clinical curriculum to develop expertise in inflammatory bowel diseases, esophageal disorders, and metabolic-dysfunction associated liver diseases (MASLD), building his foundation as a general gastroenterologist.
His research aims to identify how to provide precision medicine for gastrointestinal diseases. The increased access to genetic sequencing, microbiome analysis, and metabolomics allows physicians to identify the unique signals within each disease. Dr. Fredrick hopes to understand what makes each person’s disease unique, and discover the right formula of lifestyle changes, medications, and procedures for each unique patient. Dr. Fredrick has a drive for innovation and development of novel diagnostics, which he honed as both an AGA innovation fellow and a member of the Mayo Clinic Innovation and Entrepreneurship Academy during his training. He also has a passion for teaching and collaboration. He was a member of the Mayo Fellows Association executive board for 4 years, where he helped develop and design activities for residents and fellows to promote inter-departmental networking and community.
