Staff with Purpose and Passion: Isaac Johnson
For many, a career at a university is about more than just a job title—it is about finding a place where personal values align with a broader institutional mission. For Isaac Johnson, a fifth-generation farmer from Central Minnesota and a Senior HR Business Partner supporting the Medical School at the University of Minnesota, that connection is deeply personal.
From the Farm to the Front Desk
Isaac’s journey to the University was not a straight line. Growing up on a 120-year-old family dairy farm, he developed a strong work ethic and an "entrepreneurial spirit." After a stint in the airline industry, he joined the University in 2017 as a Business Operations Supervisor for Housing and Residential Life.
Managing Territorial Hall provided Isaac with his first taste of the impact staff members have on the student experience. Supervising dozens of student workers at the 24/7 information desk, he realized that he wasn't just managing operations—he was helping develop the next generation.
“I really loved being around young people and being in an educational environment, learning about what they were studying. It was super energizing.”
The Power of Staff Contribution
While faculty lead the research and teaching, staff members like Isaac serve as the essential connective tissue of the University. Now working in the Medical School’s Dean’s Office, Isaac views his role through the lens of "customer service" and "brand ambassadorship."
In his current role, Isaac focuses on process improvement, workforce strategy, and strengthening the employee experience across the Medical School. He understands that a positive experience for an employee often translates into a better experience for students and the broader community. Much of his work requires balancing policy, equity, and institutional risk while maintaining trust with both employees and leadership.
"I think it's important to provide employees with positive experiences, so that they tell other people positive things about working here, because that impacts our bottom line with enrollment at the end of the day."
This mindset of process improvement and collaborative support is what Isaac believes sets the University apart. After a brief departure to another system, he felt the pull to return to the "U" because of its unique culture. "Everyone is so collaborative and supportive, and open to new ideas," he notes.
A Legacy of Service
For Isaac, the University’s mission is woven into his own family history. With relatives who have passed through the dental school and the College of Pharmacy, he sees himself as part of a long-standing legacy of Minnesotans contributing to the public good. Whether he is solving a complex employee relations issue or streamlining HR trainings or processes, he knows his work supports a greater cause—from medical breakthroughs to food safety investigations.
“Of course, you always want to work for someone who has a mission that’s something positive you can be proud of, and that sense of purpose matters to me.”
Staff members are often the first point of contact for the University’s most important stakeholders. In the hands of dedicated professionals like Isaac Johnson, that mission is not just a statement on a website—it is a daily practice of empathy, efficiency, and pride.
