Our students and trainees gain experience working with a broad range of patients at various clinical training sites in both rural and urban areas across Minnesota.
Students are urged to discover the benefits of various programs and projects offered by the University of Minnesota Medical School, including the Rural Physician Associate Program (RPAP), the Metropolitan Physician Associate Program (MetroPAP), the Education in Pediatrics Across the Continuum (EPAC) program and more.
Students work and study together as lab and small group partners, body buddies, and project team members in a professional work environment that has proven to help them develop individually and collectively in the profession of medicine.
Students can choose their own pathway to the MD degree by enhancing their medical training with supplemental experiences in research, international medicine, dual-degrees or fellowship programs at the University of Minnesota Medical School, or at other institutions across the country and around the world.
Our Medical School offers a Global Medical Education and Research (GMER) program to engage in global health experiences in the U.S. or at any of 11 international affiliate sites around the world.
We work one-on-one with our students to ensure they have the best possible chance to thrive as residents. We believe in the full continuum of education, and seeing our students succeed at each stage of their career. As a result, many of our students match to residency programs across the state, country, and world, that suit their interests and special skills.
At the University of Minnesota Medical School, we value diverse points of view and people from diverse backgrounds. Through our supportive community structure and myriad of flexible options, we work to accommodate students' unique interests and talents.
Our research ranges from investigating the innermost workings of cells to analyzing health data at a population level. Our researchers thrive in an environment where cross-discipline teamwork is valued, encouraged, and rewarded. In partnership with many biomedical and health science specialists across the University, our faculty work to untangle today’s biggest medical challenges and understand the underlying science behind them.
Medical students train at a variety of clinics and training hospitals in the Minneapolis–St. Paul metropolitan area and throughout the state of Minnesota. Without competing forces from other medical schools, students have access to various healthcare systems, quality clerkship experiences, and multiple specialized elective experiences.
Our Medical School allows students to experience community engagement throughout their training at the University of Minnesota. With early exposure to patients in the first-year required community service learning component, and volunteer opportunities through various student-run community clinics and advocacy groups, students can satisfy their interest in serving and improving the human condition.
