We do not understand how the features that define human vision emerged in the retina. The central goal of the Hagen lab is to harness the power of comparative developmental biology to gain mechanistic insights into cell fate diversity, spatial and temporal patterning, and circuitry between humans and other primates using retinal organoids. By comparing human, marmoset, and bushbaby retinal organoids, we unravel the mechanisms necessary for retinal development and determine how differences in these mechanisms underly specializations of human vision.
