Transplant Hepatology Fellowship Program
The Transplant Hepatology Fellowship Program consists of 12-months of training focused on the care of liver transplant recipients and patients with advanced liver disease.
Fellows rotate on the inpatient hepatology, ambulatory hepatology and transplant surgery services. In addition, the ambulatory experience includes exposure to diagnostic radiology, interventional radiology, pathology and transplant infectious diseases. Additional educational experiences can be incorporated based on fellows’ clinical interests.
Fellows have their own continuity clinic and actively participate in the hepatology section educational activities including journal club, case conference and pathology conference. Fellows also participate in the liver transplant program’s quality and process improvement program.
The Transplant Hepatology Fellowship Program previously participated in the AASLD GI/Transplant Hepatology Pilot, which has since received full approval from ABIM to become a distinct three-year training pathway. This pathway allows eligible GI fellows to spend their third year of training in transplant hepatology. Participating fellows are then able to take both the gastroenterology and transplant hepatology ABIM certification examinations if they can achieve all competencies in both disciplines by the end of the year.
The liver transplant program at the University of Minnesota performs approximately 80 liver transplants each year and includes an active living donor liver transplant program. The fellowship provides exposure to a variety of internationally-renowned experts in transplant surgery, advanced endoscopy and interventional radiology.
This training program fulfills all requirements for training as stated by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM), and is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).
Interested applicants must be in a current gastroenterology training program with intent to graduate. Applications are welcome 12-18 months before training begins.
