Patient Care
Community-University Health Care Center
Community-University Health Care Center (CUHCC) is a federally qualified health center in the heart of urban Minneapolis, the Phillips Neighborhood, serving those who are underinsured or not insured by health insurance. CUHCC was founded by the University of Minnesota as the first community health center in Minnesota. This foundation naturally connected the University to the local diverse communities of immigrants, indigenous and people of color through person-family-community comprehensive care while providing medical education to health care trainees of all levels.
CUHCC has become one the largest urban primary care education centers in Minnesota and important continuity clinic for medical residents. Today, multiple faculty from the Division of General Internal Medicine precept medical students, internal medicine residents, and med/peds residents. CUHCC is a real world education of social determinants of health and social determinants of equity that allows the future generation healthcare professional to better partner with and care for marginalized diverse communities.
Phillips Neighborhood Clinic
The Phillips Neighborhood Clinic (PNC) is a joint partnership between the University of Minnesota Physicians and University of Minnesota Medical School. Located in Minneapolis, the PNC operates as student-run free clinic serving patients of diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. Most patients are uninsured. Patients receive a range of free services such as acute and chronic disease management, preventative visits, dental screenings, laboratory testing, and pharmacy care. Patients are also offered guidance in finding more stable sources of health care and accessing other community supports.
The PNC operates under the medical direction of Dr. Brian Sick, Associate Professor of Medicine and Director of the Division of General Internal Medicine at the University of Minneosta. Care is provided by student volunteers from the University’s health professional programs, under the guidance of faculty preceptors. A core component of the PNC mission is to develop compassionate, culturally sensitive future health professionals in an interprofessional, team-based learning environment.
