Summary
Dr. Dirweesh completed General and Digestive Surgery residency training before his Internal Medicine residency training at Seton Hall University. Subsequently, he completed his Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Advanced Endoscopy fellowships at the University of Minnesota. He then joined the advanced faculty at the division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, University of Rochester Medical Center in New York. Afterwards, he returned back to the University of Minnesota as an Interventional and Bariatric Endoscopist. He is board certified in Internal Medicine, Gastroenterology and Obesity Medicine.
Expertise: In addition to performing advanced therapeutic endoscopic procedures including EUS, ERCP and complex polypectomies, Dr. Dirweesh routinely performs both primary endoscopic bariatric procedures and a range of endoscopic treatments of bariatric surgical complications, including weight regain or inadequate weight loss following bariatric surgery. Additionally, she routinely prescribes lifestyle intervention and FDA-approved weight loss medications for patients with obesity and metabolic diseases.
Dr. Dirweesh’s research interests are in the areas of pancreaticobiliary disease, as well as endoscopic bariatric and metabolic therapies. He has authored many publications in prestigious GI journals, received several scholarly awards and recognitions, and continuous to work with other institutions in multicenter studies.
Dr. Dirweesh’s clinical interests include endoscopic surgery applied to foregut and colon conditions, with a focus on endoscopic treatment of obesity, Zenker’s diverticula, gastrointestinal bleeding conditions, early gastrointestinal cancers, complex polyps, postsurgical complications, and pancreatobiliary disease.
Dr. Dirweesh’s research interests are in the areas of endoscopic bariatric and metabolic therapies as well as endoscopic advanced biliary and pancreatic interventions. He is an active member of several professional societies, including the Advisory Board of Association for Bariatric Endoscopy (ABE)/American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE), the Educational Affairs Committee of American College of Gastroenterology (ACG)., and the American Gastrointestinal Association (AGA).
