Please join me in congratulating Stuart Amateau, MD, PhD, in his new role as Director, Division of the Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (“GI”). Dr. Amateau has served as Interim Division Director since February 2022, and I am thrilled that he will continue his outstanding leadership and inspiring commitment to excellence in teaching, research, and patient care. 

 A Minnesota Top Doctor since 2016, Dr. Amateau is widely respected for his clinical leadership in a variety of roles. From October 2015 to May 2022, he served as the Director of Endoscopy for MHealth Fairview.  In 2019, he was appointed GI Director for the Medical Subspecialty Service Line for MHealth Fairview. Within the GI division, Dr. Amateau has served as the GI Division Clinical Director since 2018, helping to recruit and retain excellent faculty and advanced practice providers while expanding patient care to six locations. In addition to these roles, Dr. Amateau currently serves on several UMP committees, including the Clinical Strategy Committee, Clinical Quality Committee and Clinical Case Review Committee.   

 Dr. Amateau is nationally recognized for his innovative contributions to advanced endoscopy with an extensive list of publications in top GI journals. He serves on several national committees aiming to drive improvement in GI practice and was named a Fellow in three societies: American Gastroenterological Association, American College of Gastroenterology and American Society for Gastroenterology. As an actively engaged voice in the national conversation on GI practice, Dr. Amateau has participated in establishing several national guidelines, including the recent manuscript on endoscopic management of malignant hilar tumors. He is an active researcher with patents and projects aimed at developing unique purpose-built devices. 

 Dr. Amateau obtained an MD and PhD in Physiology and Neuroscience from the University of Maryland. He completed his Internal Medicine residency and Fellowships in Gastroenterology and Hepatology and Advanced Endoscopy at Johns Hopkins Medical Institute. He joined the University of Minnesota faculty in 2014.  Dr. Amateau’s collaborative efforts allow him to hold additional faculty appointments in the Department of Pediatrics and Department of Surgery.
