The Department of Medicine’s Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (ODEI) recently held their inaugural Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Council Retreat. The Retreat was an opportunity for Council members to participate in immersive experiences that focused on community building and enhancing awareness of diversity, inclusion, and accessibility issues and opportunities.

The half-day retreat began with a call to action from Vice Dean Ana Núñez, MD, FACP, where she outlined four elements the Council should consider when engaging in DEI work.

The retreat continued with community building and learning activities, including an exercise in restorative justice and a session with Shanea Turner-Smith and Matt Amundson from the Medical School’s Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion focusing on “Micro Affirmations, Allyship, and Bystander Interventions”.  The event ended with a discussion from SADI Chair, Shawn Jarvis.

The DOM ODEI team plans to host another retreat for Council members in the fall of 2023. The hope is to collectively set action items that can be collaboratively addressed to further enhance DOM’s mission of promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion as an essential strategy to support all members of our academic community.
