Dr. Johnston is a faculty member with the University of Minnesota North Memorial Family Medicine Residency Program. She has a passion for addressing disparities in health care worker distribution and training. Dr. Johnston works in collaboration with the UMN Center for Global Health & Social Responsibility to develop global partnerships that identify shared challenges and barriers to effective primary care training and systems development and collaborate to create pathways for mutual learning and shared solutions.
In July 2025, Dr. Johnston was selected as the president-elect of the World Organization of Family Doctors (WONCA) North America Region. The term will start at the WONCA conference in Lisbon in September and last until 2027. She will serve as president for this region from 2027-2029.

Dr. Johnston is passionate about the provision of holistic care for patients across the lifespan. She sees patients ranging from newborns to older adults for everything ranging from preventive care to the management of complex comorbid chronic medical conditions. She is also experienced in delivery of home-based care and street medicine.
