Steven A. John, PhD, MPH, is the director of research at the Eli Coleman Institute for Sexual and Gender Health and an associate professor in the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health. His NIH-funded research focuses on developing behavioral interventions and implementation strategies to improve biomedical care engagement, particularly in the areas of HIV and STI treatment and prevention.
Dr. John has advanced expertise in implementation science, biostatistics, behavioral science, and public health, and his work spans LGBTQ+ health, mHealth, and rural health. He is committed to advancing the scientific field, serving as associate editor for Archives of Sexual Behavior and as a member of the editorial boards for AIDS and Behavior, Annals of Epidemiology, International Journal of Sexual Health, and Sexuality Research and Social Policy. He also regularly contributes his expertise to the NIH Center for Scientific Review on grant review panels.
Dr. John's significant contributions to HIV prevention and LGBTQ+ health were recognized in 2023 with the HIV and Sexual Health Early Career Award from the Society of Behavioral Medicine (SBM). In 2026, he received Fellow status from SBM in recognition of outstanding contributions to the advancement of the science and practice of behavioral medicine.
