Catalog Description:Â Students have the opportunity to become adept in the use of the sigmoidoscope as well as performing various outpatient anorectal procedures as they gain experience on an active surgical service with busy clinicians. They first assist on surgical procedures and are expected to attend the colon and rectal surgery seminars. Further opportunities to learn are available with various members of the teaching staff at affiliated hospitals.

Required session attendance:
Typical weekly schedule/Delivery Mode: M-F, 6:00am-5:00pm. No call. Saturday and Sunday off. Mon/Fri clinic days, Tues-Thurs surgery days

Course Objectives:Â This elective provides relevant externship experiences in colon and rectal surgery for the student who is interested in obtaining practical experience in the managment of common anorectal problems.
The student will gain exposure and experience in:
- sigmoidoscopy
- diagnosis and management of common anorectal conditions
- first assist on surgical procedures
- teaching seminars in colon and rectal surgery
