Benjamin Gorbaty

Biography

Benjamin Gorbaty, MD is an Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology, the Academic and Clinical Director of Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology, and the Program Director of the Adult Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology (ACTA) Fellowship at the University of Minnesota. His work focuses on advancing education, simulation, and clinical practice in adult cardiothoracic anesthesia, with particular expertise in perioperative transesophageal echocardiography (TEE).

Dr. Gorbaty completed medical school at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and residency at Rutgers–Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, where he served as Chief Resident. He completed fellowship training in Adult Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology at New York University in 2020 during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Since joining the University of Minnesota in 2020, Dr. Gorbaty has led major educational and programmatic initiatives within the Division of Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology. In addition to directing the ACTA Fellowship, he oversees divisional activities in education, research, quality improvement, and clinical operations. His clinical interests include coagulation management and bloodless cardiac surgery, improving operating room–to–ICU transitions of care, and enhanced recovery after cardiac surgery (ERACS).

A central focus of Dr. Gorbaty’s scholarly work is the development of technology-enhanced education for TEE and perioperative cardiac training. In collaboration with the Visible Heart Lab, he has contributed to a multi-platform educational ecosystem that includes 3D-printed cardiac models, virtual-reality applications, eye-tracking tools, and motion-tracking systems. This work has led to peer-reviewed publications, invited national and international presentations, and multi-institutional collaborations. He currently leads several IRB-approved studies evaluating VR-based TEE training and performance assessment.

Dr. Gorbaty’s professional goals include further expanding technology-driven cardiac anesthesia education, establishing a dedicated research and innovation program, and strengthening collaborative networks in virtual and augmented reality–based training. Through his clinical practice, educational leadership, and research activities, he is committed to advancing the field of cardiothoracic anesthesiology and supporting the development of future specialists.
