Ratan Banik

Biography

Dr. Ratan Banik is a double board-certified physician in Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine by the American Board of Anesthesiology. He specializes in minimally invasive pain procedures and has a strong research background as an NIH-funded investigator focused on chronic and postoperative pain mechanisms.

With broad expertise in pain physiology, Dr. Banik has conducted both animal and human studies. His curriculum vitae lists 68 peer-reviewed publications (z.umn.edu/pubs), including ten in top-tier journals such as Pain and Anesthesiology. His research has been cited nearly 1,400 times, and he has presented more than 70 abstracts at national and international conferences.

An innovator in global pain education, Dr. Banik founded the Global Online Pain Fellowship (gopf.umn.edu), a structured, one-year virtual training program for anesthesiologists in low-resource countries. The 2025–2026 cohort includes over 400 anesthesiologists from 40 countries, engaging in monthly live lectures, assessments, and certification upon successful completion.

Dr. Banik serves as Chair of the ASRA Resident and Medical Student Pain Education SIG and Editor of the Anesthesiology In-Training Exam Review. He is an Associate Editor for Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine and serves on the Editorial Boards of Interventional Pain Medicine and Clinical Drug Investigation. He is also a member of the ASA Global Health Committee, ASA Educational Committee on Pain, and the ASRA Pain Medicine Guidelines and Regulatory Advocacy Committee. Additionally, he serves as an Ad Hoc Reviewer for the NIH Surgery, Anesthesiology, and Trauma Study Section.

Dr. Banik regularly speaks at the ASA Annual Meetings, serving as a speaker, session chair, or panel moderator, and is frequently invited to present Grand Rounds at the universities nationwide. Internationally, he has been invited as an guest speaker at professional meetings in Bangladesh, Thailand, and Vietnam.
