Summary
Dr. Crane's research background has focused on the genome engineering of stem cells toward cellular/regenerative therapies for various diseases and disorders. Recently, Dr. Crane has applied this focus toward induced pluripotent stem cell-derived macrophages (iMacs), key immune cells in the innate and adaptive response to injury and disease. Through targeted integration of transgenes, we have stably expressed chimeric antigen receptors in iMacs targeting solid tumor malignancies. Within the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition, Dr. Crane will investigate the role of monocytes and macrophages in inflammatory bowel disease and the engineering of these cells to promote an anti-inflammatory and pro-recovery phenotype to reduce disease burden and long-term GI complications associated with IBD.
Expertise: Stem cells and developmental biology, immunology, regenerative medicine, neuroscience
