Catalog Description:  Students will receive in-depth exposure to diagnosis and management of maternal and fetal complications of pregnancy. It is recommended that students take this course in Period SP3 or SP4 of year 3 or during year 4.

Required session attendance:

Typical weekly schedule/Delivery Mode:  Students work closely with the MFM resident PGY 2 and/or 3 assigned to L&D. Student will paticipate in morning rounds and sign out daily. Will be involved with inpatient and outpatient care of the MFM practice. Overnight call is not assigned, but can be taken at discretion of student/resident.

Course Objectives:  Students will be under the guidance of the Maternal-Fetal Medicine faculty. Students will be involved in both the inpatient and outpatient care of Maternal-Fetal Medicine practice including the diagnosis and treatment of: preterm labor, preeclampsia, fetal structural and genetic abnormalities and maternal medical conditions complicating pregnancy. Students will see detailed ultrasound examinations, amniocentesis, chorionic villus sampling and possible other invasive fetal diagnostic and therapeutic procedures such as fetal shunt placement or EXIT procedures. They may also choose to spend time with a genetic counselor, pediatric cardiologist (performing fetal echocardiograms), or other pediatric sub-specialists in prenatal consultation for fetal abnormalities.
