Catalog Description: This clinical curriculum takes place longitudinally throughout the duration of the HeLIX LIC. Students work directly with a primary care physician preceptor in the Internal Medicine clinic.

Course Objectives: By the end of the rotation, students will be able to do the following:

  • Provide culturally responsive comprehensive care (including preventive, acute, chronic care) in the context of the patient’s family & the community
  • Perform basic procedural skills essential to primary care clinicians
  • Demonstrate understanding of the role of Primary Care within a health care team
  • Work effectively with local health care team members to enhance individual & community health
  • Develop communication skills & sensitivity to the psychosocial components of medical problems
  • Practice evidence-based medicine in the context of primary care
  • Understand & apply the principles of preventive care
  • Apply principles of quality improvement in practice improvement activities
  • Identify factors that contribute to and perpetuate health disparities
  • Develop the habit of reflective practice necessary for success as a life-long independent learner
  • Develop skill to be an advocate for patients & their communities within health systems & at a local & state level regarding healthcare issues
  • Understand fundamental aspects of urban environmental effects on health (eg. violence, lead, sanitation, etc.) & the impact of poverty on the health of individuals & populations

  • Clinical assessments by primary preceptor
  • Participation in regularly scheduled HeLIX didactic sessions, which includes assigned student driven content such as modules, case presentations, and reflective practice.
