Drs. Michele Allen and Brooke Cunningham will present a seminar series to provide the opportunity for a small group of research faculty and select members of their teams to critically examine their research agendas and identify concrete steps to more directly consider and address health equity in their work. The seminars will be interactive and focused on critical reflection, problem-solving, and goal setting. Prework will be required. Consultation with health equity and community-engaged researchers will be provided.

Seminar 1: Deconstructing Race in Research

  • Examine the assumptions currently held in research regarding racial differences and health
  • Identify interpersonal, institutional and systemic contributors to structural racism within research
  • Develop ways to reframe research questions from a racism-conscious approach

Seminar 2: Community Engagement to Facilitate Equity in Research

  • Understand what community members and community organizations expect from research partnerships and reflect on the implications for your research agenda, timeline, and approach.
  • Consider the health equity implications of taking community knowledge and perspectives seriously within your own research agenda.
  • Reflect on and name barriers to engaging with community members and community organizations in your research, and identify resources to address barriers.
