The Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at the University of Minnesota Medical School infuses research and education into the “whole person” care offered in the clinical setting through our joint clinical enterprise, M Health Fairview. This week, the M Health Fairview Acute Rehabilitation Center was ranked #1 in the Midwest by Newsweek/Statistica.

These rankings are made up of several inputs, including:

  •  A nationwide online survey where experts with knowledge of PM&R were asked to rank the top 10 physical rehabilitation centers from their perspective states. Recommendations for their own employers were not allowed. (45% of score)
  • Key performance indicator data for inpatient rehabilitation facilities (IRFs) published by Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). These KPIs are risk-standardized quality measures that allow for comparison of facilities regarding quality of treatment and medical conditions, even if patient populations vary. Things like lowest infection rate or highest influenza vaccination coverage among healthcare personnel are included.  (45% of score)
  •  Accreditation data provided by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) and the Model Systems Knowledge Translation Center (MSKTC). CARF is a non profit organization that assigns accreditation in the United States. M Health Fairview Acute Rehabilitation Center received CARF accreditation in 2018. (5% of score)
  • Model Systems score, a recognition by the National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research (NIDILRR). Model Systems recognize specialized programs of care available in areas of spinal cord injury (SCI), traumatic brain injury (TBI) and burn injury. Model Systems provide high-quality research and patient care to improve the health and overall quality of life of people with these afflictions. The Department of Rehabilitation Medicine was recognized as a Model System in SCI in 2021. (5% of score)

M Health Fairview Acute Rehabilitation Center, where many of our faculty members practice, scored 77.76%, making us the #1 ranked Rehabilitation Center in the Midwest. Congratulations to all of the faculty and staff whose relentless commitment to excellence in research, education, and patient care make this recognition possible.
