Maria Hordinsky, MD, Elected to American Academy of Dermatology Board of Directors

Maria Hordinsky, MD, professor and head of the Department of Dermatology at the University of Minnesota Medical School, was recently elected to the American Academy of Dermatology’s (AAD) Board of Directors.

The AAD represents more than 20,000 physicians who specialize in the diagnosis and medical, surgical and cosmetic treatment of skin, hair and nail conditions.

“The Department of Dermatology at the U of M has had a long-standing tradition of leadership with the AAD,” Dr. Hordinsky said.

For her, being elected to the AAD’s Board of Directors was not only carrying on tradition, but also making history as there has never been a female dermatology representative from the state of Minnesota on the Board of Directors.

One of Dr. Hordinsky’s goals for her time on the Board of Directors is to help lower the costs of effective but expensive medications prescribed by dermatologists.

“I have this belief that data and education can be used successfully to address imbalances like these,” she said. “Making sure we’re providing the best care possible to as many people as possible and eliminating a tiered system of care.”

Dr. Hordinsky feels that the mission of the AAD, which focuses on leadership in dermatology and excellence in patient care through education, research and advocacy, aligns well with that of the Department of Dermatology.

“I think that mission really tracks with what I’ve been doing here at the U of M, especially in our department,” she said. “We have experience in those areas, and I am excited to bring that experience to the AAD’s Board of Directors.”
