Our fourth-year students matched into residencies at hospitals and clinics in 36 states across the country.

Today, 233 University of Minnesota Medical School students found out where they will continue their medical education and training on their journeys to becoming physicians.

Our fourth-year students matched into residencies at hospitals and clinics in 36 states across the country, and 36.5% of this year’s class matched at hospitals or clinics in Minnesota.

Three of those students reflect on their time at the U of M as they celebrate Match Day and look to the future.

Ginearosa Carbone

Eva Victoria Olson Memorial Scholar, Peter and Virginia Torreano Scholar
Hometown: Sand City, California
Matched at: Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital

What are you feeling right now?

I feel so excited and lucky, honestly, going back home. To think of my mom and my tribe really makes me so emotional to think that I am here wearing dentalium and abalone earrings that my mom made me a long time ago from the beaches of Santa Barbara and Monterey area, and to think I am going back there, I am just overwhelmed.

How did your experience at the U of M Medical School help prepare you?

My training at the U really prepared me for my career in medicine. Specifically being at the Duluth Campus and being able to work on different reservations and with a multitude of people from so many different backgrounds I think has really well-rounded me to go into any setting and feel confident to care for people from such a diversity of backgrounds. I feel really lucky that the school worked with me on research projects, on volunteer efforts, on street medicine, and like I said, working with indigenous populations. They have been so flexible to help me get my education where I wanted it to be, and I do feel prepared to go into the field now. I feel really lucky that I chose this school in general thinking back to 2017-18.

Rebekah Fiers

Huston Scholar, Lagus Scholar
Hometown: Hastings, Minnesota
Matched at: North Memorial Hospital in Family Medicine

What are you feeling right now?

North Memorial was my first choice so I am very, very excited and it is an awesome program, so it is a lot of celebration today.

How did your experience at the U of M Medical School help prepare you?

The U prepared me by being a community for me, always being supportive, really showing me what my strengths are and pushing me to pursue my career in family medicine.

[Receiving a] scholarship really meant that people were looking out for me, believed in me and were willing to financially support me through this really long and hard journey.

Fadlullah Ba’th

Satran Scholar, Al Sullivan Scholar
Hometown: Washington D.C.
Matched at: Cleveland Clinic in General Surgery

What are you feeling right now?

I feel great. Cleveland Clinic was my top choice. I loved a lot about it when I was reviewing it, and I am excited.

How did your experience at the U of M Medical School help prepare you?

I feel great about the training that I got at the U. During the pandemic, it was an adventure to navigate the schedule, and I feel like certain people, especially Luke and Dr. Kim and the wellness group, worked really, really hard to make sure that we had a lot of flexibility, which I felt like gave me the experience I needed to apply, get research on the side, away rotations and things like that. I feel good about it.
