Peter Nalin, MD, Named Associate Dean for Rural Medicine

Please join us in welcoming Peter Nalin, MD, in the newly created role of Associate Dean for Rural Medicine. Dr. Nalin will also serve as the new head of the Department of Family Medicine and Biobehavioral Health on the Duluth Campus.

Dr. Nalin comes to us from Indiana University (IU) School of Medicine, where he is the Executive Associate Dean for Educational Affairs and an associate professor in Clinical Family Medicine. He has an extensive career in medical education, starting as rural medical education preceptor in upstate New York, and at IU leading the Bloomington Medical Education Center—where he recently guided the school through successful reaccreditation by the LCME—and was instrumental in laying the groundwork for a new Regional Academic Health Center at IU. Other notable accomplishments include developing new family medicine residency sites in Indiana, receiving the 2009 Faculty Member of the Year award from Family Medicine residents, and being named one of America’s Top Family Doctors.

Please help us thank Dr. Cathy McCarty for her excellent service as interim department head. She will resume her role as the Associate Dean for Research on the Duluth Campus once Dr. Nalin joins us on June 30, 2019.

One of our primary roles in the state is training physicians to provide care in rural and Native American communities. Please offer Dr. Nalin your support and enthusiasm as he undertakes these key roles.
