MINNEAPOLIS, MN, December 3, 2019 -- Catherine Kotz, PhD and professor and director of graduate studies for the Medical School’s Department of Integrative Biology and Physiology, has been elected as the Vice President of The Obesity Society (TOS). The organization works to advance the science-based understanding of the causes, consequences, prevention and treatment of obesity in order to improve the lives of those affected.

As Vice President, Dr. Kotz will educate doctors and patients about obesity as a disease and work to increase support for funding that will allow insurance companies to cover medical costs associated with obesity.

“I would like to ensure that the kind of science we bring to our annual meeting is rigorous,” said Kotz. “I will make sure that we continue to track the basic science on the topic of obesity by engaging our basic and clinical scientists.”

Before becoming vice president, Kotz, a twenty-six-year member of TOS, served on numerous Society committees, including Public Affairs, Nominating, Planning, Finance and Publications. She has also served on council and as a spokesperson for the organization.
