MINNEAPOLIS/ST. PAUL (12/08/2023) — With final approval by the Board of Regents today, the University of Minnesota Medical School is expanding its program for the first time in 50 years with the addition of the CentraCare Regional Campus St. Cloud location.

"This is an exciting day for Minnesota and its families and communities," said Jakub Tolar, dean of the University’s Medical School and vice president of Clinical Affairs. "This program expands on our commitment to Greater Minnesota, building on our highly regarded programs in Duluth and through our Rural Physician Associates Program."

This new location will expand the Medical School's class by 24 students per year, beginning in 2025, with the program educating 96 students by 2029 and increasing the overall class size by ten percent.

The population of Minnesota has increased by 50 percent since the Medical School added the Duluth campus in 1972. Increasing class sizes to meet demand requires additional capacity for clinical experiences. CentraCare offers additional hospitals and clinics to provide training for U of M medical students.

The St. Cloud-based Medical School campus at CentraCare will focus on educating physicians across specialties to address the unique healthcare needs of rural Minnesotans and immigrant populations.
