Dr. Levi Teigen in the Department of Medicine spoke to Everyday Health about gut health during the holidays. He said hefty doses of fat and sugar and can trigger gut problems. Dr. Teigen also recommended the Healthy Eating Plate method, which not only helps with portion control but also correlates with minimizing trigger foods and maximizing gut-friendly foods. “The key is moderation. Too much of anything is never good, and that applies to eating and drinking during the holidays,” he said. 

Helpful habits for maintaining gut health include recognizing the triggers, limiting food portions, paying attention to fiber, and keeping stress at bay and staying active. Another healthy strategy to limit over eating is to drink a full glass of water before and after the meal.

Dr. Teigen notes that you should not feel the need to deprive yourself of the wonderful food over the holidays. Using these four practices can help keep your gut health in check.
