Catalog Description: This course will provide instruction and advanced experience in surgery and its components for the student who has completed a basic internship or clerkship in surgery. Students taking this course can expect to participate directly in patient care at a level of responsibility that is similar to a first year intern. The student will work with their assigned team under the supervision of the faculty and will participate fully in the care of hospitalized patients in the operating room and in clinics. Any specific clinical experiences will be assigned after the drop/add deadline for that period has passed. (FU): Students may opt for specific clinical experiences in General Surgery, Minimally Invasive/Bariatric Surgery, or Surgical Oncology. (HC): Students may opt for specific clinical experience in TBD. (RH): Students may opt for specific clinical experience in General Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Trauma, or work in the Regions Burn Center. (VA): Students may opt for specific clinical experience in TBD.

Required session attendance: Does not apply
Typical weekly schedule/Delivery Mode: M-F, 5:30am-5:00pm. Saturday and Sunday may be working days. At-home call is expected Q4, depending on the number of MS4s on service. All hours and schedules are at the discretion of the attending and/or resident on service and may not exceed 80 hours per week.
