Acting Internship Vascular Surgery
Catalog Description: This course will provide instruction and advanced experience in vascular surgery for the student who has completed a basic internship or clerkship in surgery. Students taking this course can expect to participate directly in patient care at a level of responsibility that is similar to a first year intern. The student will work with their assigned team under the supervision of the faculty and will participate fully in the care of patients on the hospital wards and in the ICUs, operating room and clinics.

Required session attendance: Monday 3:30-5:00 PM Vascular Preop Conference; Tuesday 7:00-8:30 AM Surgery M& M and Grand Rounds; Thursday 7:00-9:00 AM Vascular Surgery Conferences
Typical weekly schedule/Delivery Mode: M-F, 5:30am-5:00pm. No overnight or home call, although the student may volunteer to return to the hospital to observe interesting cases during overnight hours. All hours and schedules are at the discretion of the attending and/or resident on service and may not exceed 80 hours per week.

- To perform a thorough admission History and Physical examination for patients with non-cardiac vascular disease
- To be able to appropriately prepare the vascular patient for intervention or operation
- To provide appropriate postoperative care for the vascular patient
- To participate in operative and interventional procedures in the operating room and in the interventional suite
- To gain familiarity with the use of surgical equipment as well as gain competence in use of basic technical skills
- To develop a fund of knowledge concerning pathophysiology, fundamental surgical principles and underlying anatomy of common vascular disorders
- To demonstrate accurate diagnosis of common comorbid conditions of the vascular patient
- To competently interpret common vascular imaging studies
