Catalog Description:
This 2-week elective rotation in Anesthesia History is open to 3rd and 4th year medical students who are interested in anesthesiology and examining major concepts in anesthesiology through a historical lens. The medical students will participate in an historical overview of the evolution of anesthesia presented by anesthesiologists and medical historians. Didactics will occur during the morning or aftenoon, allowing medical students ample time to work on their poster presentation. Medical students will choose an anesthesia-related artifact from the Wangensteen Historical Library to feature in a research paper and presentation. They will follow a patient through the perioperative period in order to tie in the evolution of the artifact and how it better informs how anesthesia is approached today. The work completed in this clerkship may lay the foundation for a submisison of a presentation at a national conference and/or publication.
