Catalog Description: Gastroenterology consultative services at the University of Minnesota main academic hospital. Weekly rotations on three inpatient consultative services: general GI (luminal), advanced endoscopy & pancreaticobiliary, and hepatology. Outpatient experiences in subspecialty GI clinics with faculty preceptor. Students will primarily participate in inpatient consultative GI care with exposure to urgent endoscopic procedures

Required session attendance:Â Thursday afternoon GI conference: 3:00pm-5:00pm

Course Objectives:Â This elective provides excellent exposure to the breadth of gastrointestinal, hepatic, pancreas-biliary, and nutritional issues in the field of Gastroenterology. At the end of this course, the student will be able to: perform a focused GI History & Physical Exam, develop a working understanding of common GI/hepatic/pancreas-biliary disease and their medical management, observe routine and interventional endoscopic procedures, participate in multidisciplinary rounds and conferences, and gain exposure to the spectrum of care in Gastroenterology.
