On April 29, 2026, the University of Minnesota Medical School gathered at the Bell Museum for its annual Dean’s Tribute to Excellence in Education. The ceremony honored the exceptional students and faculty who go above and beyond to bring the Medical School’s mission to life through research, teaching, mentorship, leadership, and community impact.

“What I appreciate about the University of Minnesota Medical School is how I've been given early opportunities to take leadership in both academic and research settings, “ said student Ananya Garg, recipient of the Steer-Johnson Award. “I really value all the individualized mentorship that I have received.”

Reflecting on the importance of faculty guidance and mentorship in cultivating the next generation of doctors, faculty awardees acknowledge their significant impacts. Dr. Erin Filmore, recipient of the Distinguished Teaching Award, noted, “What I value most is the shared commitment to creating learning environments where each student at every stage of their journey can succeed. It is my genuine privilege and honor to teach, to journey with my students as they learn.”

Student researchers expressed the gratitude of the valuable sense of community and support from various mentors. As stated by John Ry Lozada, recipient of the Dr.Marvin and Hadassah Bacaner Research Award. “In this whole process, I've been lucky to find people who not only support me, but also who want to grow alongside me, which I think speaks so much volume.”

Our sincerest congratulations to all of the 2026 honorees, whose dedication, passion, and excellence continue to elevate the University of Minnesota Medical School community. We extend our sincere gratitude to the committee members, donors, and staff whose dedication and support make these awards possible.
