Hennepin Longitudinal Integrated Experience (HeLIX)

 

HeLIX

HeLIX is a 10-month program at Hennepin County Medical Center for third-year medical students from the University of Minnesota Twin Cities and Duluth Campuses. While at HCMC you will develop strong relationships with both faculty and patients as you work through most of your core clerkships:

  • Inpatient Medicine (8 credits) 
  • Acting Internship in Primary Care (4)
  • Surgery, General (4) 
  • Surgery, Subspecialty (2) – Options include orthopedics, ophthalmology, urology
  • Pediatrics (4) 
  • OB/GYN (4) 
  • Psychiatry (4)
  • Emergency Medicine (4) 
  • Elective (4) 

Unique learning experiences:  Orientation coincides with new resident orientation, and includes primer for each specialty. Simulation-based training, learning basic principles of narrative medicine/reflective practice, weekly didactic sessions, structures formative assessment system (separate from grading), opportunities for home visits and working with ancillary services including phlebotomy, nursing, PT, OT, RT, and PharmD. 

General Timeline of HeLIX Program:

  • September-October: Recruiting
  • Late September: Application roll-out
  • Thanksgiving Weekend: Application Deadline
  • December and January: Interviews
  • Late January: Participants selected and offered spot in program
  • March-May: Onboarding, information gathering, online compliance training
  • June-April: Program
